Outdoor space you can actually use in August.

Deck Builder & Patio Covers in Fresno & the Central Valley

Shade is not a luxury in the San Joaquin Valley — it is the difference between a back yard you use and one you look at from May to September. A pergola or solid patio cover over the west-facing side of a house takes the worst of the afternoon off the slab and off the wall behind it, and a deck gets usable outdoor living onto a sloped lot where a patio never would.

Decks & Patio Covers

What this covers

Shade is not a luxury in the San Joaquin Valley — it is the difference between a back yard you use and one you look at from May to September. A pergola or solid patio cover over the west-facing side of a house takes the worst of the afternoon off the slab and off the wall behind it, and a deck gets usable outdoor living onto a sloped lot where a patio never would.

We build both. The composite deck in these photos is laid over a wrapped frame with a white railing and a built-in perimeter bench; the pergola is stained wood over stamped concrete, tied back into the home's existing covered entry so the two read as one structure. Sequoia Builders & Remodel is CSLB licensed (#1160042), we build decks and covers across Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Madera counties, and the estimate is free.

Process

How We Build Decks & Covers

  1. 01

    Site visit and sun check

We look at the grade, the wall we would be attaching to, and which direction the afternoon sun actually comes from — that decides where a cover earns its money.

  2. 02

    Design and written estimate

Decking material, railing style, post spacing and cover type priced out, with the structural approach spelled out.

  3. 03

    Footings and frame

Piers and posts set, ledger flashed properly where we attach to the house, then framing and blocking to carry the finish.

  4. 04

    Decking, railing and finish

Composite or wood decking, railings, benches and stairs, then stain or finish on wood members.

Questions

Decks & Patio Covers — asked and answered

  • Composite or wood decking — which should we pick?
Composite costs more up front and holds up far better to Valley sun and heat cycling with almost no maintenance. Wood is cheaper to build and looks warmer, but it wants re-sealing. We will price both if you want to compare.
  • Do patio covers need a permit?
Attached covers and anything structural generally do, and requirements differ between Fresno, Clovis, Visalia and county jurisdictions. We check the rules for your address and handle the permit when one is needed.
