Stairs, railings and structural timber, cut on site.

Custom Staircases & Finish Carpentry in the Central Valley

Stairs are the piece of carpentry with the least tolerance for approximation. Rise and run have to be equal the whole way up or people trip on the one that is different; stringers have to be cut accurately and carried properly; guards and handrails have to meet code and feel solid under a hand. It is the work we most enjoy, and it is a fair test of whether a crew can actually cut wood.

Sequoia Builders & Remodel builds exterior and interior staircases, railings and balustrades, plus the heavier carpentry that goes with them — post-and-beam entries, exposed timber structure and steel-connector work. Process

How We Build Stairs & Carpentry

  1. 01

    Measure the rise

Total rise gets measured properly and divided into equal risers before anything is cut. This is the step that decides whether the stair feels right.

  2. 02

    Design and estimate

Stringer layout, tread material, guard and handrail style and any landing framing, priced in writing.

  3. 03

    Cut and set

Stringers cut on site, landings framed, treads and risers fitted, and the whole assembly tied into the structure at top and bottom.

  4. 04

    Guards, rail and finish

Posts, balusters and handrail installed to code height and spacing, then sanded and finished or stained.

Questions

Staircases & Carpentry — asked and answered

  • Can you replace an existing staircase in place?
Often, yes — though whether the existing opening and headroom allow a compliant rise and run is the first thing we check. We will tell you at the estimate if the opening has to change.
  • Do you do exposed beam and post-and-beam work?
Yes. Heavy timber posts and beams with galvanized steel connectors are part of what we do on new construction and covered entries.
